Recently in for bodywork restoration with us at Vintage Works was this 1969 Nerus Silhouette Formula 100 Sports Prototype.

Chassis no. 003

This car has recently had a all of it’s aluminium bodywork restored by us and replacement of the coolant pipes which are an integral part of the vehicle’s space-framed chassis. The picture here shows the car without it’s fibreglass top fitted.

The Nerus is an interesting piece of motorsport history, developed for the Formula 100 category announced in the UK in 1969. Formula 100 was a short-lived attempt to do for sports car racing what Formula Ford had done for single seaters. Concieved along similar lines to Formula Ford, lightly modified engines and road tyres being mandantory and a maximum capacity of 1300cc was stipulated.

Within a short time of the regulations being finalised, established manufacturers such as Lotus, Beattie and Royale had announced suitable cars, together with a newcomer, Nerus, who’s Silhouette F100 would turn out to be one of theseries’ most successful designs. Essex based Nerus Enngineering specialised in the manufacture of racing car components, and when F100 was announced the company decided to develop their own car. Design was entrusted to South African Cedric Selzer, Jim Clarke’s race engineer in 1963/64, who came up with the conventional spaceframe chassis with aluminium panels.

Only two silhouettes were made, with an additional car being built up from spare parts.

Things are looking good at this stage. Not long now and the sculpture commissioned by Sean Lynch will be finished.

Make sure and call back again in the next few weeks and see the final photo shoot….. There could be something a little unusual to see!
Many thanks to John Dore for coming down with his DeLorean for this picture.

Welcome to Vintage Works!

Make sure to come back each month and see what’s on!

The current project is a sculptural piece based on the DeLorean DMC12 commissioned by Kerry artist Sean Lynch. Sean has carried out an extensive study into the history of the infamous Irish marque and written a short publication on this industrial saga.

Read on to view an extract from that publication, and Vintage Works’ involvement!

Using traditional handforming metalwork techniques {Vintage Works} has set about making a wooden mould in the shape of a DeLorean car and forming out of stainless steel grade 304 a bootleg version of the exterior body panels.

Crimping, wheeling, welding and hammering out the shapes, the work has been labour intensive, producing by hand what was once made through industrial means by the tooling now in Kilkieran Bay.

This transposition points towards a kind of contingency in putting elements of this history to work, literally, in a speculative form. Will this version of the DMC-12 be entirely remade? How can art ‘re-enact’ an entrepreneurial act such as DeLorean’s? And what forms of objecthood can be established through the transmission of historical and economic knowlage?

Sean Lynch

Thanks for taking the time to read this – the first post of Vintage Works! I trust you will return again in the near future to see what else we have going on!
